About us
It was in 1994 that a few kind-hearted people decided to come together and set up an organization which would work towards serving the community and making this world a better place. They decided that the best way to achieve their objective was to be a part of the worldwide movement of Rotary and this led to the birth of Rotary Club of New Bombay Seaside on 14th April 1994.
Rotary Club of New Bombay Seaside, a part of Rotary International has since been working tirelessly towards improving the lives of the people, primarily in and around Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India through numerous community service projects in the fields of healthcare, education, sanitation, environmental conservation, youth development, etc.
The past three decades have seen our Club executing numerous impactful projects. Many of our projects are carried out on a continuous and sustaining basis. What was then a small step in the direction of doing good to community has since become an impactful movement and the changes brought by our club to the lives of beneficiaries is something we are proud about.
In the very second year, our club adopted Waahal Village, a village in Navi Mumbai. The lives of the villagers turned for better with our club laying water pipelines, upgrading the classrooms in village school, installing solar lighting in the connected Adivasi village which did not have power. As we moved ahead, our Club adopted Minatayi Hospital at Nerul and carried out various improvements, including renovating the Paediatric ward, installing water coolers & uninterrupted power system, etc.
During the Rotary Centenary year i.e. in 2005, as a part of our club’s drive towards Going Green, our club commissioned a Gas based Crematorium, built at a cost of approximately Rs 1.50 million, at Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The same year also saw the launch of the flagship project of our club i.e. “SPIRITS”, an annual inter-school youth festival for school children to showcase and develop their talent in various fields including performing arts, communication, creative work. SPIRITS, which will now be entering its 22nd edition is the largest competition of its kind being held in Navi Mumbai and is a keenly awaited competition with close to 3000 students from more than 40 schools participating in the more than 40 events.
In its effort towards conserving environment, our club has been conducting tree plantation drives in association with various other agencies on an on-going and continuous basis. In 2010, our Club launched a campaign to replace use of plastic bags by promoting use of jute bags. This initiative has since been followed by many other clubs and organisations. Our club has constructed check dams in villages in Maharashtra towards water conservation.
For more than two decades now, our club has been recognising persons from various vocations for their excellence and many of such awardees have since scaled even greater heights and made a name for themselves at national / international level.
The health of a nation lies in the health of its people and community service projects aimed at improving the health of public has been one of the focus areas of our club ever since inception. In 2019, the silver jubilee year of our Club, we set up a Human Milk Bank facility at the cost of Rs. 1.50 Million at DY Patil Hospital, Nerul. This was the first human milk bank facility in Navi Mumbai and this continues to serve the needs of society as of date.
During the Covid pandemic, our Club provided approx. 3900 PPE Kits to Covid warriors in various hospitals to help guard themselves from the dreaded virus outbreak. Apart from this, our Club also conducted Covid vaccination camps to provide free vaccination to approx 500 under-privileged persons. Over the years, our Club has also donated ICU beds, dialysis machines, x-ray, ultra-sound (sonography) and other equipments to various hospitals, apart from replacing the old equipments in the operation theatre of a local hospital serving under privileged. Apart from the above, other initiatives include cervical cancer vaccination camps, diabetes detection camps, eye camps, TB & Thalassemia awareness campaigns, detection & prevention of malnourishment and obesity in children, etc.
Our Club has also installed a solar electricity generation facility at a local hospital towards promoting use of renewable energy, while at the same time providing the hospital to deploy the savings in cost towards promoting medical care for the needy.
Our Club’s focus area includes providing education support to the under privileged and needy children. Apart from running a Shikshaangan (centre for providing coaching to students after school hours), the Club has been providing financial assistance to deserving and needy students, self-study apps for students. Our Club is working towards building a sizeable corpus to facilitate carrying out impactful projects in the area of education.
At times of natural calamity, our Club has reached out to communities at distant places too. This included construction of house at a cost of Rs. 0.50 Million for family affected by the floods at Kerala, South India in collaboration with Rotary club of Parur.
Our Club has during the period 2018 to 2025 executed approx 250 projects at a cost of Rs. 32.60 Million (approx. 400,000 USD) benefitting approximately 85,750 beneficiaries. In addition to carrying out projects directly, our Club also makes contributions to the Rotary Foundation which is used to execute various community service projects world-wide. During the above period, our Club has contributed approximately 145,000 USD to the Rotary Foundation.
Each member of our Club feels proud to be a part of this Club, as it has given ample opportunities to its members to engage themselves in service to community in a very meaningful way and impactful manner.
No doubt, we have miles to go; but the future is promising and we are confident that our Club would continue to make a significant and positive impact in the lives of the community around us. What has made it possible for our Club to do impactful projects is the boundless passion and commitment of each of its members. The Club is and would always be thankful to the various donors, agencies and organisations for their support in execution of these projects.
